Trivia Miercolès • « Mujeres al borde de un ataque de nervios »

In honor of the nomination of Pedro Almodóvar as President of the Jury of the Cannes Festival, I would like to present to you, the people of the internet, every Wenesday, a film from the latter. Because I realized that many of you never watched a film made before 2000 or a Spanish film altogether.

So, today will be about one of my favorite Almodóvar film: Mujeres al borde de un ataque de nervios or Women on the Verge of a Breakdown. Besides being one of the best title for a film, it is one of the funniest film you’ll ever watch.

The story is the one of Pepa (Carmen Maura) who has just been dumped by her Don Juan, married, of a boyfriend Iván. Then his son, Carlos (Antonio Banderas) arrives with his fiancée Marissa (Rossy de Palma) because they are interested in her panthouse. Pepa knowing who Carlos’ father is tries to find out where Iván is. All the while Candela (María Barranco) Pepa’s friend, depressed, tries to kill herself. While Marissa unsuspectedly drinks a gazpacho spiked with sleeping pills. It is right then that Candela admits she has had an affair with a Shiite terrorist who has been arrested and now she fears to be involved in all of it. By now you understand that it is a classic Vaudeville.

The film is inspired by a French play entitled The Human Voice by Jean Cocteau ( and by the way you should watch his film version of Beauty and the Beast because it is brilliant ). To return on our subject, it is has won no less than 10 awards from different film festivals and finallty gave Almodóvar recognition overseas. And if that doesn’t convince you just watch it for Rossy de Palma who I adore.
